The Pras are a lesser-known ethnic group residing in the secluded valleys and forested uplands of Laos. Their history is preserved through generations of oral tradition, with stories of their ancestors' journeys, village foundations, and survival in the face of adversity. The Pras have maintained a distinct identity, shaped by their language, customs, and deep connection to the land. Their isolation has allowed them to preserve many traditional practices, even as the world around them changes.
The Pras live in small, tightly-knit villages where daily life revolves around subsistence farming. Families cultivate rice, maize, and a variety of root crops, relying on the rhythms of the seasons. Foraging, fishing, and hunting supplement their diet, and meals are often shared among extended family members. Homes are typically constructed from local materials, with bamboo and thatch providing shelter from the elements.
Family and community are at the heart of Pras society. Elders are honored for their wisdom, and decisions are made collectively. Children are raised to respect tradition and contribute to the well-being of the household from a young age. The Pras mark important milestones—such as harvests, weddings, and the birth of children—with communal gatherings, music, and ritual feasts, reinforcing social bonds and cultural identity.
The spiritual life of the Pras is rooted in animism. They believe that spirits inhabit the natural world—trees, rivers, rocks, and mountains—and that these spirits must be respected and appeased. Rituals and offerings are a regular part of life, performed to seek protection, healing, and favor for the community. Ancestor veneration is also significant, with ceremonies held to honor those who have passed on and to seek their guidance.
These beliefs are deeply held and shape every aspect of Pras life. The Pras place genuine trust in the spiritual forces they perceive around them, seeking harmony and security through their rituals. At present, there is little or no gospel witness among the Pras, and most have not heard the message of Jesus Christ. Their spiritual longing points to a need for the hope and assurance that only Christ can provide.
The Pras face many challenges. Healthcare is scarce, and treatable illnesses can become life-threatening. Educational opportunities are limited, especially for girls and those in remote areas. Economic hardship is a daily reality, with few resources beyond what the land yields. Spiritually, the Pras need to hear the good news of Jesus, who offers freedom from fear and the promise of eternal life. There is a need for compassionate workers who can bring both practical help and the message of hope in Christ.
Pray for open doors for the gospel to reach the Pras people for the first time.
Ask God to provide access to healthcare and education in Pras villages.
Pray that the Pras would be set free from fear of spirits and discover the peace found in Jesus.
Intercede for workers to be sent to live among the Pras, demonstrating Christ's love in word and deed.
